Traveling over the holidays can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. With a little bit of planning and an extra touch of diligence, you can make holiday travel the least of your holiday stressors. Continue reading to learn more.

Holiday Travel Tips to Consider

Clean and organize the car

Before loading your car to the brim with gifts, food, and suitcases, dedicate an hour to deep clean your car. Create a fresh, uncluttered environment for your family so that tensions don’t start to rise the moment you pull out of the driveway. Once your car looks and smells amazing, be strategic about where you’ll store and pack your items. Think ahead to any potential triggers that could cause a meltdown and plan ahead.

Store easy-to-eat snacks where they can be accessed by everyone in the family. Choose foods that require little help for small fingers and don’t create crumbs or irritating messes. Bring a couple of trash bags along so that you can keep your trash contained and easily dispose of it at the next rest stop.

Keep devices loaded, powered up, and connected

Let’s face it: In this day and age, smartphones, WiFi access, iPads, and DVDs players are the secret weapons to keeping you and your passengers entertained.

Create a new playlist with some of your family’s favorite hits. Find and download a new podcast series to entertain you when conversation seems to lag. Buy a new DVD or video game to keep the kids entertained, even if it’s only for an hour or so. Invest in some cheap earphones and a few extra USB cables so the cabin can stay peaceful and the devices can stay powered up.

Schedule routine maintenance

Now, the part we can help with:

The last thing you want to happen when you’re traveling over the holidays is for the check engine light to turn on or to be stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire. Schedule a quick check-up now to ensure your oil, tires, coolant, and washer fluid are all in good shape. And just in case a punctured tire happens anyway, make sure you know how to access your jack, and double-check to see that the spare tire is inflated and ready to go in an emergency.
