One of the simplest aspects of car maintenance is ensuring that your engine has fresh oil. However, many owners are unaware of the importance of regular oil changes, which can end up causing significant damage to their car. Checking your Volvo’s oil doesn’t require much experience or in-depth vehicle knowledge. With common sense and a good eye, you can monitor your car and know when it’s time for an oil change.

Warning Signs Your Car Needs an Oil Change

While most vehicle models require varying lengths of time in between oil changes, it is always a good idea to keep an eye out for possible red flags. If you notice any of the following signs, then it’d be a good idea to bring your car in for service right away.

Excessive mileage since last oil change

On average, cars should have their oil changed every 3,000 miles, or every three months. As mentioned previously, this can vary depending on your car make or model, but it can also depend on your car’s age. Newer cars might be able to go up to 6,000 miles between oil changes, but you should still check your dipstick at least once a month.

Strange engine noises

The function of motor oil is to keep the engine properly lubricated so that there is minimal brushing or scraping between parts. This also keeps the engine running silently. When your car is running on low or old oil, engine noises can increase. You might hear knocking or rumbling under the hood, which indicates the engine is damaging itself due to lack of lubrication.

Smoke comes out of the exhaust

It’s normal for your car exhaust to emit a translucent vapor, but when you start to notice smoke, then it’s time for an oil change. Oftentimes, exhaust smoke indicates that you might have faulty engine parts or possibly a leak.

Oil is dark or dirty

Fresh, clean oil appears amber and translucent. Over time, oil collects particles and debris from the engine, which can cause it to turn dark and dirty. As mentioned previously, it is wise to check your oil dipstick once a month to ensure everything looks clean.
